History and purpose of Spherical Self Defense
Spherical Self Defense exists to provide you with a complete, practical, and effective training program that will prepare you for the most common types of attacks that you might one day face. We pray that these skills will never be needed but that you will have them anyway. We are on a mission to make this training available to everyone in Pottawatomie Co, Oklahoma Co, and Tulsa county (the three most dangerous counties in Oklahoma) and eventually to the world. We also strive to be a blessing to everyone who walks through our doors and to make a positive impact on the communities that we serve.
Spherical Self Defense has been in business in one form or another since 2008. In Jan 2022 we relocated to our birth city of Shawnee, Ok. I, Chance Fine founded the school and I have been training in self-defense since 1995. What makes us different from most schools is that we offer training in striking, grappling, firearms, bladed weapons, blunt force trauma weapons, weapons of opportunity, and the self-defense mindset all in one cohesive program. We even have a shooting range in Meeker, Ok.
Spherical Self Defense was started in 2018 but began long before that. In 2008 I was teaching Tae Kwon Do, Hapkido, Filipino weaponry, and kickboxing in Shawnee. I then began training in wrestling and Jiu-Jitsu. Then I added those to the schedule of classes because I saw their value in the area of self-defense. However, a problem arose. I noticed that my students were growing more and more confused and frustrated by the amount of curriculum and limited class time. I knew that I had to make one of the following changes.
I could either cease teaching some programs and therefore not offer a completely defensive curriculum.
Continue as I was doing and lose people and effectiveness along the way.
Create a new system designed for the self-defense needs of the average person.
I did not want to create a new system but I knew that I had to be true to my calling and the only system that I felt that I could eliminate would be Tae Kwon Do and that still would not fix the problem. I knew that I had to create a new system because it was the only viable option at the time. I also realized that as times change, systems must evolve to stay relevant.
In August of 2008, I took the plunge and created Chun Tu Moo Sool (CTMS). Since then I have been teaching and revising CTMS every time I learn something new, realizes that one technique can be replaced by a better option, and re-evaluate the system every year to make sure that CTMS is fulfilling its purpose.
In 2020 I brought in my long-time friend, student, and Jiu-Jitsu coach Jeff French. Bjj is a vital part of CTMS. Together we have been building a system that grows stronger every day. In 2022 I brought in Becca Fine a long-time friend and instructor. We are continually evaluating our programs and systems to offer you the best service that we can. We also offer Hapkido because we realize that some people just prefer traditional systems but these systems are still taught with self-defense in mind. We want every class to be fun, educational, challenging, and safe for you.
We look forward to training and serving you! Chance

Chun Tu Moo Sool
Chun Tu - Combat Moo - Martial (military) Sool - Skills/Techniques/Arts
Chun Tu Moo Sool is an American system of self-defense that is driven by the following principles:
Instructors are to cross-train to keep an open mind, grow in knowledge, learn new perspectives, keep CTMS alive and evolving, stay humble, study new combat philosophy and tactics, revisit the past to stay connected to the roots of CTMS, and to keep the system from stagnating.
Self-defense is the purpose of CTMS
The curriculum must be relevant to the culture.
Know your ethical and legal use of force options.
CTMS must be well-rounded at all times. If there is an aspect to combat/self-defense, the CTMS instructor must cover it sufficiently.
